Why I Walk to Make a Difference
Not a day in my life has passed when I haven’t had to deal with the consequences of kidney disease.
Shortly after I was born, my mother had a kidney transplant. I realized at a very early age how significant kidney disease is and how life-changing organ donation can be. If it weren’t for the kindness of a total stranger, my mother’s donor, I may have not had the opportunity to know her.
Later on, both of my sisters were diagnosed with kidney disease and eventually received organ transplantations. I was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2005 and received a kidney transplant on the day before Thanksgiving 2007. I can tell you from personal experience that the quality of life after transplant and the effectiveness of the medications have greatly improved. I have an excellent chance for a long, healthy life.
Without the work of organizations like the National Kidney Foundation and events like the Boston Kidney Walk, none of this would be possible. The NKF works to raise money and awareness. In the years since my mother’s & sisters’ organ transplants, medical education and research have moved us forward.
26 million people in the United States are living with Chronic Kidney Disease, and most of them are unaware of it. The two leading causes of kidney failure are diabetes and high blood pressure, two diseases that can be controlled with early detection and treatment. Education and awareness are the keys: know your risks and manage them. That’s what walking in the Boston Kidney Walk is all about.
I walk because it is a great way to meet others that have been affected in one way or another by kidney disease. There is lots to learn, and lots to share and even more to celebrate.
Participating in The Walk is a wonderful opportunity for me to give back for all that I have received. I want to be able to say that I did something about kidney disease. Now, when it matters. I know the consequences of waiting: I walk for my mother & eldest sister, who passed away much too young.
