National Kidney Foundation of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire
and Vermont (NKF MA/RI/NH/VT) announces the application process
for this yearıs Pediatric Renal Research Award, given over a twelve
month period and providing research funding from July of 2008 through
June of 2009. The NKF MA/RI/NH/VTıs Pediatric Renal Research Award
will consist of a total of $35,000. Applications are due March 21, 2008. The research funded by this award must be conducted by
an investigator located within the states of Massachusetts, Rhode
Island, New Hampshire and Vermont. Both clinical and basic research
proposals will be considered. The award recipient will be announced
on June 1, 2008.
This
award will not be made to research projects that are currently funded
by other mechanisms including NIH, nonprofit foundation or corporate
sponsors.
Scope
of the Award
It
is recognized that many kidney diseases affecting children are distinct
from those present in adults. For example, major causes of chronic
renal failure in children include developmental abnormalities of
the kidney, and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. In contrast,
diabetes, hypertension and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney
disease represent major causes of chronic renal disease in adult
populations.
This
award is made to encourage research that will have a significant
impact on both the understanding and treatment of pediatric kidney
and urological diseases. While all childhood renal disease will
be considered within the scope of this award, a special emphasis
has been placed on research addressing the pathophysiology and treatment
of nephrotic syndrome in children. This emphasis is in recognition
that nephrotic syndrome in children has multiple etiologies and
underlying histologies and that it represents major diagnostic and
therapeutic challenge to researchers, caregivers, patients, and
their families.
